To mark International Women’s Day on 8th March, we’re sharing a personal reflection from one of our colleagues about her experience working in the security industry.

Security has traditionally been a male-dominated sector, but perspectives like this highlight how the industry is evolving and the opportunities it offers for women building their careers.

I never saw myself working within the security industry because I always thought it was a male-dominated field, but since joining FRG I’ve realised there’s definitely a place for women like me. What surprised me most is how much of this industry is about people; communication, organisation, problem-solving and building trust.

And honestly, sometimes women stepping into spaces like security bring ideas or perspectives that just haven’t been thought about before. Not because men aren’t capable, but because different lived experiences naturally lead to different solutions. It’s not about trying to “fit in” to what’s already there. It’s about adding something new. Your personality, your way of leading, your way of communicating, that difference is genuinely needed and valued.

For me personally, joining a male-dominated industry pushed me in the best way. I’ve always had a bold personality, but I knew I had to lean into that confidence even more. There was definitely a little bit of “fake it till you make it” at the beginning, reminding myself to speak up, stand my ground and trust my own judgement. Over time, that confidence became real. And that’s something I’ll carry with me wherever my career takes me.

To other women considering this path, I’d say: don’t shrink yourself to fit the space. Walk in as you are. The industry doesn’t just have space for you – it benefits from you.
