The security industry has long been perceived as a male-dominated field, but times are changing. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who are making their mark in security—whether in frontline roles, leadership positions, or behind the scenes ensuring safety and protection across the UK.
The Evolving Role of Women in Security
Women have always played a crucial role in security, yet their contributions have often been overlooked. Today, the industry is seeing a positive shift as more women take on key roles as security officers, dog handlers, risk assessors, and even business owners in the security sector. Their presence is helping to challenge outdated stereotypes and bring new perspectives to an ever-evolving industry.
Why Diversity in Security Matters
A diverse workforce strengthens the security sector. Women bring unique skills, such as strong communication, de-escalation techniques, and attention to detail—qualities that enhance the effectiveness of security operations. Research shows that diverse teams perform better, and in an industry where trust and professionalism are paramount, having a range of perspectives only improves service delivery.
Challenges Women Still Face in the Industry
Despite progress, women in security still encounter challenges, including gender bias, unequal opportunities, and the need to prove themselves in a traditionally male-oriented environment. Additionally, practical issues such as access to tailored uniforms, appropriate facilities, and flexible working arrangements remain concerns that need to be addressed to ensure true inclusivity.
Success Stories: Women Leading the Way
Across the UK, many women are breaking barriers in security. From leading canine security units to heading up risk management teams, women are proving that gender does not define capability. Their successes pave the way for future generations, showing young women that security is a viable and rewarding career path.
Encouraging More Women to Join the Security Industry
As of 2024, women held approximately 10.9% (47,124) of Security Industry Authority (SIA) licences in the UK which is a slight increase on previous years, but shows that more still needs to be done to promote gender diversity and inclusion in the security industry.
To create a more inclusive industry, security firms and organisations must actively promote opportunities for women. This includes mentorship programmes, leadership training, and ensuring recruitment strategies are free from bias. Encouraging schools and colleges to introduce young women to careers in security can also help build a pipeline of future talent.
Looking Ahead: A More Inclusive Future
The security industry is changing for the better, but there’s still work to be done. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of women in security while recognising the need for continued progress. By fostering inclusivity, breaking down barriers, and challenging stereotypes, we can create a security industry where talent thrives—regardless of gender.
